on the Ruhr Dams on the night of 16-17 May 1943 under the
command of Wing Commander Guy Penrose Gibson VC, DSO
& Bar, DFC & Bar through to their final operation
of WWII, Hitler's 'Eagles Nest' at Berchtesgarten on 25th
April 1945. Altogether, 617 Squadron attacked 95 targets, most of which required great accuracy. The specially selected crews of 617 Squadron developed a bombing accuracy and determination that was unsurpassed. By the end of the war they were capable of dropping a 22,000Lb bomb with an error of just a few feet. |
